PORTUGAL SURF
While Portugal has many famous waves like Nazaré and the unique first surf world reserve Ericeira, you can find spots all along the west coast and on the south coast in the Algarve
You can surf all year, but intermediate and advanced will prefer autumn and spring, when it is still warm and the north winds calms down for some great swell and less crowded beaches.
Be aware that the portugese surfschools own licenses for spots in their region and area Not every surfschool in Ericeira can teach at all the spots there, Same goes for Algarve, Cascais, Caparica and Peniche and the other regions. For example, if you stay in Santa Cruz (midway between Ericeira and Peniche) you won´t surf Ericeiras pointbreaks, as it belongs to the Peniche area.
ERICEIRA
The first and only world surfing reserve. Just a short 30 minutes drive from Lissabons airport. It´s an old whitewashed fisherman village with charme and a quite nice selection of surfshops, surfhotels, Restaurants and a lot of Surfspots. Not like Peniche, reef and pointbreaks are more frequent here and intermediate to advanced surfers will get most out of it. However beginners can head south to Foz do Lizandro and other beachbreaks suiting their level Ericeira is the most consistent place in Europe with over 56% and you can almost always find some swell.

PENICHE
The surfing capital of Portugal.
Peniche, famous for long sandy beaches, surfing, sardines, and Supertubos has some of the best beach breaks on the planet and is definitly the best known surfspot in Europe.
The variety of surf spots, the consistency of the waves, and the annual WSL World Tour Championship in October all add to its popularity.
You´ll find all type of breaks, bust mostly beachbreaks. It´s a good spot for all levels.
It´s as short 45 minutes drive from Lissabon and you´ll find heaps of surfschools and surfcamps around. While Ericeira is more kind of a cute old fishing village, expect Peniche to be more industrial and less traditional. On a good day you can head south to Santa Cruz or Lourinha for less crowded waves.

ALGARVE
While really crowded with beach tourism in summer, Algarve is a great european surf getaway with warm temperatures in autumn. On a sunny day in october you can be lucky and go out in boardshorts or bikini.
The Algarve has one big advantage: when the north wind blows the west coast or the swell is too big there, you can still head to the south coast and enjoy perfectly protected waves there. Some spots near Sagres like Zavial are known for localism and can get really crowded when it´s pumping.
